What is an audio interface?
An audio interface is a piece of equipment that converts analog signals, such as the sound of a guitar, bass, or other musical instrument, or the voice of a vocalist, into digital signals for input into a computer, or converts digital signals into analog signals for output to speakers.
An audio interface will be able to record sound louder because it will be able to amplify and input low output sounds such as guitars.
This reduces the amount of noise and makes it possible to record in an easy-to-hear quality.

Using an audio interface
This section describes how to set up Logic and Garageband to produce sounds and record instruments from the “audio interface” of your choice.

Audio Interface Settings
Now, here is how to set it up.

Change “Output/Input Device” to the “Audio Interface” you wish to use.

The sound coming out of Garageband will be output from the selected audio interface.

Connect bass and guitar
When recording bass, guitar, etc., a cable called a shield is required.
The shield can be inserted from either end.
Insert the shield into input 1 of the audio interface.
Now you are ready to play the guitar.
When not using an audio interface
The procedure for connecting an audio interface is as explained above.
However, when I do not have an audio interface connected, or when I am using a newer, different audio interface, I get ‘The last selected audio interface is currently unavailable.
If this item appears every time you start up the software, it is a hassle to turn it off.
If this item appears, it can be removed by changing the audio interface’s device settings.
The device here refers to the audio interface or other device connected to the Mac.
To do this, select “GarageBand” -> “Preferences” in the menu on the screen.
Select “Mac Speakers” for “Output Device” and “Mac Microphone” for “Input Device” in the “Audio/MIDI” and “Device” sections.
If you have selected an audio interface, the sound will come from the audio interface you have set up. In the above setting, the sound will come out from the Mac’s built-in speakers.
Input device is where the sound will come from. In the above setting, the sound will come from the Mac’s microphone.
